EyesOn Design

On June 25, 26, 27, 2004, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology will again sponsor the highly successful car show, EyesOn Design. For the show’s 17th year, the theme chosen is race car design. On the meadow of the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, over 200 racing vehicles of all eras and categories of racing will be presented. The 2004 Honorary Chairman is Herb Fishel, until very recently the leader of motor vehicle racing efforts at General Motors. In addition to the display of racing vehicles, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology will present its Lifetime Design Achievement Award to Chuck Pelly, the designer of the Chaparral and Scarab race cars.

The Design educator’s Award will be presented to Bill Porter, the legendary design guru from the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

Grosse Pointe’s own automobile race car driver, Robbie Buhl, will serve as the Grand Marshal for the event.

On Friday evening, June 25th, there will be an informal gathering of young designers and retirees at The Underground World Corporation. Eve of the EyesOn Friday evening, June 25th.

On Saturday evening, June 26th, the black tie dinner, Vision Honored, sponsored by Decoma International, will be held at the new General Motors Heritage Center. The car show itself, at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House will take place at 10:00 AM till 4:30 PM. In addition to the magnificent racing vehicles there will be a collection of winning Soap Box Derby racers, and just as interesting, there will be over 100 of the original Fisher Body Craftsman’s Guild models created in the 1950s and 1960s.
