OTP 100 OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT THEORY I
3 credits
Prerequisite: Admission to the ophthalmic assistant
or
technician/technologist program (see Admission Procedures).
Career as Ophthalmic Medical Personnel, medical-legal concerns, recording
a medical history, emergency screening (triage), vision assessment
theory &
techniques, basic optical concepts, refractive errors and their correction,
lensometry skills, introduction to contact lenses, assisting in minor
surgery, care of ophthalmic instruments, and quality assurance issues.
Three hours lecture per week for 15 weeks.
OTP 101 OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT THEORY II
3 credits
Prerequisite: Admission to the ophthalmic assistant
or
technician/technologist program.
Continuation of OTP 100 with lecture topics on medical terminology,
ocular
topography, immunity, inflammatory disease, principles of asepsis,
sterilization, disinfection, pathology of the eye, overview of the
cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, and nervous systems, principles
of
pharmacology, testing pupils and visual fields, causes of low vision,
and
ocular motility. Three hours lecture per week for 15 weeks.
OTP 102 OPHTHALMIC ASSISTANT SKILLS
3 credits
Prerequisite: Admission to the ophthalmic assistant
or
technician/technologist program.
Through laboratory demonstration and practice, students will be introduced
to those skills which must be mastered through clinical practicum
or
on-the-job experience. Students work with laboratory equipment, schematic
eyes, and partners to practice visual acuity testing, manual lensometry,
retinoscopy, refractometry, ocular motility screening, manual perimetry
(Goldmann and Tangent Screen), manual keratometry, contact lens evaluation,
and applanation tonometry. Four hour lab per week for 15 weeks.
