Support groups

The DIO, with help from its volunteer arm the Friends of Vision, provides support services for the visually impaired and blind. A person needs support as soon as possible after a diagnosis of vision loss has been received. The message that life can still be rewarding and useful must be communicated.

Support groups help the individual realize:

  • they are able to cope
  • they are not alone
  • they can remain independent
Support groups for the visually impaired also help the care giver or family by providing assurance that the visually impaired individual can lead a safe and satisfying life. The DIO currently manages support groups involving over 200 individuals.

"I was very sad when told by the doctors what was ahead of me. Greatly discouraged, I finally pulled myself together and came to a meeting. This group has become a godsend."
