Ways to Donate

Since 1972 the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology(DIO) has been a bridge between the visually impaired and sighted community.  There are many ways to get involved and support the DIO and its important work.  The Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in 1972 in the State of Michigan.  License # MICS 5203

Annual Appeal

Each year the Institute has an annual appeal campaign.  The funds are important for the continuation of the DIO’s programs.

Bequest - a legacy

  • a sum of money committed to a not-for-profit and donated upon the donor’s death
  • a transfer of property from an estate to a not-for-profit.  A bequest to a charity entitles the donor to an estate tax deduction for the full value of the property transferred as defined by law.

Donations

Gifts of money to the DIO can be given in any amount and you can choose to give to the DIO for our Greatest Need or gifts can be restricted to specific DIO programs; Visually Impaired Services, The Eye and The Auto , or The Eye and The Chip.

Endowment

The capital that provides income for a not-for-profit.  The Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology ‘s endowment account is held with the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

You may donate directly to the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology’s account by contacting the Foundation at 313-961-6675.

Many donors make gifts of endowment funds due to the availability of Michigan tax credits. Michigan law permits individuals and businesses to reduce Michigan Income Tax or Michigan Business Tax by a credit of 50 percent of the amount contributed to the Institute’s endowment fund at the Community Foundation.

Matching Gifts

There are two types of matching gifts that are especially helpful in raising dollars for the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology.

  • an individual or organization pledges to give an equal amount of money to a certain charity.  The amount given is equal to the amount raised in individual gifts.
  • employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees.  If your company is eligible, request a matching gift form from your employer, fill it out, sign it and send it with your gift. DIO will do the rest.  The impact of matching gifts to the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology is an important fundraising opportunity.  Some companies event match gifts made by retirees and/or spouses.

Memorials/Tributes

Contributions in memory of or in honor of a special person in your life are another way to support the DIO.  An appropriate message will be sent promptly from the DIO informing the person designated of your gift.  No amount will be mentioned.

Contact the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology for more information on “giving” to the DIO.
