Friends of Vision

Since 1977 Friends of Vision (FOV) has been the volunteer arm of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. FOV volunteers are a key element in the success of the support groups for the visually impaired. They provide much of the environment that makes our support groups pleasant and comfortable.  FOV volunteer callers check to see that members are well and able to attend meetings. FOV volunteer drivers assist in providing transportation to and from support group meetings. Other volunteers bake muffins and other goodies for the meetings. Volunteer hostesses are here to greet members and assist in a variety of ways during the course of the meetings.  Our volunteers take a real interest in our members often forming lasting personal friendships.

Friends of Vision also play an important role in fundraising with their Spring cash raffle and other fundraisers throughout the year.  All the activities have an element of fun.  Popular events such as the Preakness Party in May are run completely by the Friends of Vision and attended by them as well for a good time. The raffle held in June is a bigger undertaking but the rewards are bigger too.

The Friends of Vision are the HEART of DIO. It is the steadying hand helping the DIO achieve its goals. There are many opportunities for volunteer work which involve little time and energy (can be as little as 3hours/month), but provide great rewards to those who become involved. New members are always welcome, and dues are $25 per year.
