The DIO and Friends of Vision sponsor three support groups for seniors,  and one adult support group (age 55 and under)for people with visual impairments or blindness.  Under our direction, support groups for people with age related macular degeneration, other visual impairments and blindness are constantly expanding, creating the need for additional volunteers.

• Telephone callers to confirm attendance at meetings and to check on our homebound members
• Drivers to take members to and from meetings
• Assist at meetings with refreshments
• Escort members on field trips
• Help with special Holiday parties

Volunteers can work as few or as many hours weekly, bi-weekly or monthly as they like.

Two Senior Groups meet the first and third Monday morning and the first and third Wednesday morning from 10 AM – 11:30 AM of each month at the DIO.  One Senior Group meets the first and third Monday afternoon at St Lucy Church in St Clair Shores from 1 PM – 2:15 PM. Senior groups meet October thru May.

The adult group meets the first Wednesday evening of each month at the DIO building from 6 PM – 7:30 PM, September thru June.

The Martha F Gorey Resource Center at the DIO is open Monday thru Thursday, 9 AM - 5 PM.  Volunteers sell materials to visually impaired persons and families from Michigan and Ontario who visit the Institute in search of visual aids necessary to make their lives more livable. The DIO has the largest collection of low vision aids in southeast Michigan. They are priced virtually at our cost. Volunteers aid the visually impaired and their families in selecting these aids and in managing the store itself. Volunteers with retail experience and great patience with visually impaired patrons are always greatly prized.  Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 2 hours 1 day per month, bi-weekly or weekly, whatever fits their schedule. 

The DIO uses clerical volunteers on an as needed basis.  People with computer skills are used for data entry.  Volunteers are sometimes needed to collate literature for special events and mailings.  During busy fundraising months, volunteers are used to answer telephones and take reservations.

Volunteers are needed for some clerical help - phone calls, folding, mailings prior to event.  Volunteers are used for registration, guides & monitors during the 3 day event.

Volunteers are needed to accompany our visually impaired and blind participants in our program to “Lend an Arm”.
Volunteers are needed to man the DIO booth at the Health & Fitness Expo Friday afternoon and Saturday day and evening before the race.
Volunteers help the day of the race by manning the DIO Spirit Station located on the marathon route.  DIO volunteers bring noisemakers and banners to cheer the participants on.

We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for the EyesOn Design events.  Prior to the event we need volunteers to distribute window posters and flyers throughout the Metro Detroit area.
