AT & T Computer Training Lab
In 2007 the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology (DIO) applied for and received a grant from the AT & T Foundation to purchase and install 3 computer stations using talking and/or large print software to teach the visually impaired and blind basic keyboarding and computer skills.
The DIO first offered these computer training courses to its visually impaired support group members. Presently the classes are offered to any visually impaired or blind individual in the metropolitan Detroit area. There is no cost to the visually impaired for the courses. We do require a $25 deposit that is refunded based on attendance and completion of the course work. The DIO and Friends of Vision have worked out a system using volunteer drivers for those who are not able to provide their own transportation to the DIO building. Classes are offered on a first come, first serve basis after a telephone interview with Nancy Pilorget, Support Group Facilitator and Nino Pacini, our instructor, a retired computer specialist who happens to be blind.
Classes usually begin in the fall of the year.
On-going funding sources for the AT & T Computer Training Lab are the DIO Annual Appeal, individual gifts, event fundraisers, and other grant monies.
If you are visually impaired or blind or someone you know is, and are interested in learning basic computer skills please call the DIO at 313-824-4710 Monday – Thursday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
